Capturing the Spirit of Art Deco

Miansai’s latest collection pays homage to the Art Deco artistic movement of the 1920s, echoing the famous architecture of the label’s Miami home. Composed of hundreds of different buildings with this particular style, Miami’s Art Deco District has the highest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world. For the latest campaign, we visited the historical district to absorb the beautiful architecture that lines the main avenue just off Miami Beach.

Art Deco reached its peak during the great depression when Americans looked for an architectural style which would lift the mood of the nation. Composed of basic geometric shapes (circles, squares and lines) and characterised by heavy ornamentation, the buildings are bursting with pastel colours, terrazzo floors, tropical motifs, relief moulding and neon lights.

For the model shoot we wanted to capture the spirit of Art Deco optimism. We positioned a pair of models on top of various iconic buildings, facing towards or away from each other, their bodies almost silhouetted in black against the blue Miami skies. Challenging the limits and perceptions of scale, each pair holds an oversized piece of Miansai jewellery, which interacts with the distinctive style of the building below.

The still life series is a more stylized continuation of the concept. Blurring the lines between art, architecture and photography, we created a simple set that plays with colours, clean cuts, shadow and light. Art deco-inflected studs and pendants are draped decadently over staircases that lead in multiple directions. For the animated series, rings and bracelets bounce playfully down the steps.
